what is "this"?
"this" is whatever it is interpreted to be by the reader with respect to each of those people. For example, "An athlete said 'beat this'" in this case "this" can be a reference to a record he/she has set. "A boss said 'meet this'" can mean here that "this" is a deadline, or match someone's performance standard, or even meet a client, etc. It's what you take it to mean :)
